Frequently Asked Questions - Electrolysis

What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a method of permanent hair removal that involves inserting a fine probe into each hair follicle to deliver an electrical current directly to the hair root. Electrolysis treatment requires multiple sessions over an extended period time to permanently remove the hair.

There are three methods of Electrolysis: Galvanic, Thermolysis, and Blend.

  1. Galvanic achieves the destruction of the hair root through a chemical action that produces lye. Lye is a caustic substance that when produced inside of the follicle it destroys the hair root.
  2. Thermolysis achieves the destruction of the hair root through the production of heat.
  3. Blend achieves the destruction of the hair root utilizing a combination of both Galvanic and Thermolysis. In blend, the galvanic current produces lye in the follicle and then the thermolysis current heats up the lye destroying the hair root.

All three methods are effective in permanently removing hair. Your electrologist will determine which method is best for you.

Is Electrolysis painful?

Electrolysis is not painless but pain levels vary from person to person depending on individual pain tolerance levels. A sensation is definitely felt during the treatment. Some describe it as a tingling sensation or a stinging sensation. Pain sensitivity also varies in different areas of the body. Our goal is to work closely with each client to customize their treatment to reduce discomfort as much as possible while still effectively treating the hair. Some clients chose to use numbing creams to enhance their comfort during the treatment.

Does Electrolysis work on everyone?

Yes, Electrolysis works on all hair colors and hair types. It works on all areas of the body. However, there are some contraindications that may affect which method of Electrolysis can be performed. During your consultation your electrologist will go over your medical history to determine if you are a suitable candidate. In some situations, a doctor's note may be required before starting the treatment.

What are contraindications?

A contraindication is a specific medical condition, symptom, or circumstance that makes a treatment inadvisable as it could cause harm to the patient. Electrolysis contraindications are those that interfere with electrical currents, hinder healing, or risk an infection.

Some examples include cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, individuals with pacemakers, metal implants in the body, pregnancy (breast & abdomen areas), warts, moles, cold sores, sunburns, recent use of Botox or fillers, etc.

If any of these situations apply, patients may be required to obtain a doctor's note before proceeding with treatment. If there are any questionable situations, a doctor's note is always recommended to ensure the safety of the patient.

How many sessions do I need?

Every individual's length of treatment is unique. There are several factors that influence the length of the treatment such as the size of the area being treated, the density of the hair, medications, hormones, prior hair removal methods (waxing, tweezing, laser, etc.) and many others. The average treatment can take about a year and half to two years. Understanding this is a long-term commitment will allow for realistic expectations. Patience will be necessary, gradually over time you will begin to notice less hair.

Frequently Asked Questions - General

Electrolysis vs Laser?

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal while Laser offers long-term hair reduction. Electrolysis treats individual follicles regardless of skin type or hair color (including gray, blonde, & white). Laser targets melanin therefore it works best on dark hair and light skin. Some individuals do see great results with laser however others experience adverse effects like stimulation of hair in hormonal areas, increased hair growth, and regrowth.

What is the hair growth cycle?

Every individual hair grows on its own cycle known as the hair growth cycle. This cycle is unique to each follicle. The cycle goes through 3 phases. The anagen phase, the catagen phase and the telogen phase. During the anagen phase the hair follicle is taking in all the nourishment it needs from the blood supply, this is the growing phase. The next stage is the catagen phase which is the transition phase. At this point the hair root detaches from the blood supply and is no longer receiving any nourishment. The third phase is the telogen phase which is the resting phase. At this point the hair dies and falls out. The hair cycle plays a critical role in the Electrolysis treatment because applying current during the Anagen phase (the growth phase) ensures we are applying current to the hair root when it is still connected to the blood supply. This means we are destroying the area that is providing the nourishment therefore stopping the hair growth.

Sterilization & Sanitation?

We adhere to the infection control guidelines set by the American Electrology Association. All equipment is sanitized between each client. Tools used in treatment are sterilized in a medical grade sterilizer. The electrologist wears gloves at all times when making contact with the clients skin. We disinfect the patients skin prior to starting treatment. The probes, which are the thin filaments we insert into the hair follicles, are single use only and are immediately disposed of after your service has concluded.
